Growing season 2019

Winter has been a great time to reflect on the previous season.

It is also a great time to catch up on Blog posts, as I got rather busy last year with weddings and workshops and neglected my writing duties to talk about all the wonderful flowers we grew!

It was the first year I've grown on a large enough scale to supply shops, before its was just bits for weddings that I had booked in.

We had a wonderful spring in comparison to the year before and the beast from the east, and by June, the first few weddings were taking place and we had flowers to supply and sell.

We had a slight aphid problem early on with the Aquilegias and some Lupins, but soon managed to get on top of them. Only to have a row of Ammi succumb to carrot fly. Growing isn't without its challenges!

British Flower Week was in June, so I had great fun at hiding little jars all over the local villages for people to find. There's a wonderful joy in giving away flowers to brighten someones day.

High summer brought with it lots of colour, cornflowers, cosmos, larkspur, we had several DIY weddings in July, these were full of jewel colours and seasonal flowers.

Purple was also a popular colour, this year I am growing a lot more darker purple flowers, such as Black Ball cornflower, as I love the dark dramatic colour.

Daucus Dara and Sedums were also another wonderful purple/pink addition to the patch in the summer and flowered well into the autumn!

But my favourite flowers of the season were the Strawflowers and Zinnea's. Such bright and bold colours, their impressive vase life and ability to keep flowering well into October makes them a winner for me!

Zinnea 'Giant Wine' was beautiful with such wonderfully large flowers. Lets hope for a sunny season as these guys love a love long sunshine hours, and not this current damp wet British weather!

Seed sowing has commenced and I cant wait for this year and some of the new variations and varieties I'll be growing.
